Bio
William Angliss is a PhD Candidate in Ethnomusicology and Music Performance at Ohio University, as well as a professional musician and music educator. He holds a master's degree in Music with his focus being World Percussion Performance.
He has traveled to many places around the world in the pursuit of learning different kinds of music, from Montreal to St. Lucia to Ghana to learn Tabla, Caribbean Drum Set, and Gyil xylophone. He has been taught by Gyil masters such as Tijan Dorwuna and Jerome Balsab, Banares Guarana Tabla maestro Shawn Mativetsky, Carnatic percussionist Sam Jeyasingham, Steel Pan master Andy Narell, and mentored by percussion masters and Oakland University professors Mark Stone and Patrick Fitzgibbon.
William has been the President of the World Music Organization at Oakland University, promoting cultural awareness and outreach by using music cultures from around the world as a means of fostering connection across cultural barriers.
He regularly performs on Drum Set and Latin Percussion with Steel Pan players and Jazz combos, and plays solo improvised multi-percussion for the modern dance classes at Oakland University, using a mixture of Western and World influences to creatively free improvise. He is also a member of a Creative Jazz group, and has extensive experience free improvising on a number of different percussion instruments.
He has performed at places such as The Percussive Arts Society International Convention with Grammy-award-winning artists such as Haruna Walusimbi, University Of Michigan Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University, The Strand Theatre in Pontiac, MI, Jazz Clubs such as Cliff Bells, occasionally plays for Big Band groups like the Premier Big Band and musical theatre groups, gives demonstrations and performances at numerous elementary, middle, and high schools in the metro-Detroit area, and regularly performs at Oakland University in multiple different ensembles.
He also works with organizations such as Accent Pontiac teaching in-school programs and providing inventory and instrument maintenance.
William also gives private lessons in percussion, ranging from Drum Set and Snare techniques to Indian Percussion to hand drumming and world percussion styles, to Latin percussion such as congas, shakers, bongos, etc. and is currently accepting students!
